How can talking to others with cancer help me?
Facing cancer can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Peer support connects you with others who truly understand what you’re experiencing—because they’re on a similar journey. Whether you’re a patient or supporting a loved one, talking to people who “get it” can bring comfort, reassurance, useful tools and tips and reduce feelings of isolation.
For many, peer support is a valuable complement to professional counselling, offering a more informal and relatable space to share experiences. For others, it can be an alternative source of emotional support when counselling isn’t the right fit or isn’t available. Either way, it helps reduce feelings of isolation and fear, while providing emotional encouragement.
Patients benefit from hearing how others cope with treatments and day-to-day challenges, while families and carers find relief in sharing their worries and frustrations with people who understand the pressures of supporting a loved one through cancer—without judgment.
Peer groups also offer practical tips and information about managing symptoms, treatments, and accessing services.
Most importantly, being part of a peer community fosters a sense of belonging and connection. Sometimes, just knowing you’re not alone can make all the difference on your cancer journey.
Please note that not every type of activity is offered in all our centres, and some are available online, so please visit our cancer support centres to explore what’s near you.

Donate to support
local community groups
Your support means local cancer support groups, including online and in-person sessions, are available to help your community; providing free, personalised wellbeing support to people affected by cancer. £10 could help to fund walking groups, £40 could help pay for a peer support session, and £130 could help fund a centre for a day.
Our cancer support services are 100% generously funded by the donations we receive. Every penny you donate makes a huge difference. From everyone at Wessex Cancer Support, thank you.
