Upcoming Talks

Thursday 5 June, 12:30 – 1:30pm

Jaana Jeffery: Nutrition and cancer

Come and join Jaana to explore what it means to “eat well if you are living with or beyond cancer, without it costing the earth or your purse”. Have you ever thought about how your diet can impact our planet? Do financial pressures negatively influence what you are eating? Both aspects can impact the quality of your diet which means you may not be having the nourishing diet your body needs. Jaana will unpack the science in a meaningful way that you can then apply to your everyday nutrition.

Monday 14 July 14:30 – 15:30
Deborah Porter: Recurrence and Cancer Geonomics

Hosted by Deborah Porter, Deputy Director Transformation, Genomics Unit, NHS England

Deborah has held the appointment of Deputy Director Transformation in the NHS England Genomics Unit since June 2020. Her current transformation portfolio includes the national Operational and Service Management of the Genomics Medicine Service, but the majority of her portfolio is associated with Data and Digital Transformation and Workforce Development, with particular emphasis on Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery. Come and join Deborah to find out how Genomics has the potential to fundamentally change how healthcare is delivered in the NHS, by:

  • Personalising the treatment for existing cancer patients, improving access to cutting edge treatments.
  • Cascade testing of high-risk individuals to provide the choice to embark on preventative actions e.g. surgery, screening etc.
  • Use of less invasive testing techniques and precision medicine to improve outcomes, reducing hospital visits and improving quality of life.
  • Quicker and earlier identification of patients potentially eligible for clinical trials including bringing cancer vaccine trials into the NHS.
  • Use of less invasive blood testing and enhanced surveillance to identify individuals with tumour biomarkers to fast-track treatment decisions as part of ongoing management.
