Our Office Volunteers are the backbone of Wessex Cancer Support Head Office, keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes alongside our small groups of paid staff. From managing enquiries and coordinating appointments to supporting our fundraising and volunteer teams, the work of our volunteers is essential to the success of all our services. By volunteering in our Head Office, you’ll play a vital role in helping us reach and support more people affected by cancer, all while gaining valuable experience and being part of a friendly, dedicated team.

As an Office Volunteer, you’ll be an integral part of our daily operations, lending your skills to different departments and helping with a range of administrative and office tasks. Every hour you contribute helps us support people affected by cancer when they need it most.

Role description for an Office Volunteer at Wessex Cancer Support

Office Volunteers play an important part in helping our organisation run smoothly behind the scenes. By supporting day-to-day administration, you’ll be making sure our staff and volunteers can continue to focus on providing the best possible service. Tasks you’ll be asked to do may include:

General administrative support

−

Helping with filing, photocopying, scanning and other routine office tasks that keep everything running efficiently.

Supporting communications

+

Assisting with the preparation of newsletters, staff updates or other internal communications that help keep everyone informed.

Preparing and organising resources

+

Helping to put together information packs, event materials or resources for staff and volunteers.

Maintaining records and databases

+

Updating and checking information to ensure our records are accurate, well organised and easy to use.

Accepting donations and preparing for banking

+

Processing financial donations carefully and securely, following our procedures.

Signposting enquiries

+

Answering phone calls, emails or in-person queries politely and directing them to the right person or department.

Personal attributes to become an Office Volunteer

You don’t need to be an expert administrator to get started, training and support will always be available. What matters most is an interest in helping and a willingness to learn. We’re looking for people who have:

Administrative skills

−

Some experience of office tasks is useful but not essential. A willingness to get involved and learn makes all the difference.

Clear and concise communication

+

Whether by phone, email or in person, being polite, friendly and clear helps colleagues and visitors feel supported.

Organisational skills

+

Being able to keep tasks on track and manage resources methodically is a big help in a busy office environment.

Computer literacy

+

Confidence with basic computer tasks (using Word, Excel or email) will be useful and training can be provided where needed.

Adaptability

+

Office work can vary from day to day – being flexible and open to trying new tasks makes the role more rewarding.

Attention to detail

+

Careful, accurate work helps maintain high standards and ensures our records and resources are reliable.

Volunteering in our Head Office is a great way to build skills, meet new people, and play a vital role in supporting the smooth running of our organisation.
