Step outside, connect with others, and boost your wellbeing with our walking groups.
What are the benefits of walking?
Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible ways to support your overall health and wellbeing. Just a short daily walk can help improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen muscles and bones, and support joint health, all without needing any special equipment or training.
But walking doesn’t just benefit your body, it’s proven to be great for your mind too. Spending time outdoors, especially in nature, can help reduce stress, lift your mood and boost concentration. Many people find that walking gives them space to think, process emotions or simply take a break from daily pressures. Regular walking can improve sleep, increase energy levels and contribute to a greater sense of balance and wellbeing. You can learn more from the NHS website on how exercise can help manage pain, among other health benefits.Â
Our local walking groups are designed to bring together anyone affected by cancer to support both your physical and emotional health, whatever your age or fitness level.
What are the benefits of walking for people with cancer?
Walking is a gentle yet effective way to support both physical and emotional wellbeing during and after cancer treatment. It can help improve energy levels, reduce fatigue and maintain muscle strength and joint flexibility, all of which can be affected by treatment. Regular walking may also support circulation, aid digestion and help manage some of the side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Just as importantly, walking can be a powerful tool for emotional health. Whether you’re walking alone or with others, it provides time and space to clear your mind, reduce stress, and boost your mood. Walking in nature or as part of a supportive group can ease feelings of isolation and help restore a sense of normality and control during a challenging time.
Because it’s low-impact and can be adapted to suit all fitness levels, walking is a safe and accessible form of physical activity for most people with cancer. It’s not about speed or distance, it’s about taking gentle, regular steps to support your recovery and wellbeing.
How to refer
If you are new to Wessex Cancer Support and have not already had a wellbeing assessment with one of our friendly team, we ask that you contact us to make a referral for an appointment. Our team will provide you with further information and availability of any activities you both decide on. As a new client, we’ll add you to our email newsletter list so you can keep an eye on forthcoming activities, too.
Alternatively, you can email careteam@wessexcancer.org.uk to refer to your initial chat or drop into your local cancer support centre in person.
We do ask that you let us know if you are planning to attend any group sessions, so we can keep tabs on numbers and let you know if anything needs to be rearranged. Do keep an eye out for your client newsletter for updates or new activities, too.
What to expect from a group walk? Â
Preparing for one of our group walks is simple and the main thing is to feel relaxed and enjoy it. Your walking leader will have let you know in advance the meeting point and how long the walk is, so you can arrive in good time and feel happy you want to walk that far. We usually meet in places with free parking, when possible.Â
Wear loose, weather-appropriate clothing and supportive footwear that’s appropriate for the distance. Bringing some light clothing layers can help you keep warm or cool down if the temperature changes – and a waterproof jacket might be handy just in case of rain! Remember the mantra ‘slip on sunglasses, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat’ if it’s going to be sunny. It’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated and perhaps a small snack to keep your sugar levels up. Don’t forget any medication or personal items you might need, and you’re welcome to bring a walking aid if you like.Â
Most importantly, bring yourself just as you are. There’s no pressure to go fast or far and your walking leader will aim to manage the pace to suit everyone. So enjoy the company and the fresh air. Group walks are about connection, not competition.
Donate to support a
walking group session
Your donation helps make services like our walking groups sessions possible. Our walking groups promote physical exercise to support overall wellbeing, and provide a safe, supportive group for those needing emotional support. £20 could help support the cost of wellbeing services that ease anxiety and promote emotional recovery during tough times.
Walking group and wellbeing sessions are generously funded by people who donate, fundraise, and shop with us. Every penny you donate makes a huge difference. From everyone at Wessex Cancer Support, thank you.
