The power of talking

Cancer is an emotional journey, not just a physical one. Patients and their families often experience a whirlwind of feelings and having a safe space to express them can make all the difference.

What is ‘tea and chat’?

Something as simple as chatting over a cup of tea can be surprisingly powerful. We know that there will always be a place for professional counselling services but there can be just as much benefit in sharing experiences with other, ‘ordinary’ people, going through the same things we are.  Our ‘tea and chat’ sessions are an opportunity to do just that. Organised by our cancer support centres, these sessions create a relaxed, informal setting where people feel comfortable to open up without pressure or judgment. The warmth of the moment, combined with friendly conversation, encourages emotional closeness and builds trust.  Essentially, it is a lovely, informal way of finding and giving peer support.

How does talking help those with cancer?

Whether you have had a cancer diagnosis or are supporting someone who has, talking openly can help you process your feelings, reduce the burden of any anxiety and feel understood. It can help you make sense of what you’re going through, perhaps restoring  a sense of control and calm in an otherwise uncertain situation.  You know that those listening will ‘get it’, without you having to fully explain what you’re going through.  Sharing worries and experiences can reduce any feelings of isolation or emotional overwhelm you might have, and it builds connection and mutual support, helping everyone feel less alone on the journey.  You can share any practical concerns, too, and bounce your thoughts or decision-making off others in a similar boat.

Research shows that emotional support through talking is linked to better mental health, better coping skills, improved wellbeing and even physical health benefits like lowered stress levels and stronger immune responses.  Talking is a basic but profound way to nurture human connection, reminding you that you are heard, cared for and supported every step of the way.  Something as simple as sharing tea can bring people together, creating a space for conversation, calm and connection. In times of stress or uncertainty, that simple ritual can feel like a small but powerful act of care and kindness to yourself.

Donate to support a
tea and chat session

Your donation helps make services like our tea and chat sessions possible. We all need a safe space to talk. Our drop-in sessions are for new and existing clients where they can talk to our trained Support Volunteers to find out more information and to share their story. £10 could help support the cost of refreshments for our drop-in sessions.

Tea and chat sessions are generously funded by people who donate, fundraise, and shop with us. Every penny you donate makes a huge difference. From everyone at Wessex Cancer Support, thank you.
