Remote Counselling is an opportunity for you to talk through any worries, giving you the space to find helpful and meaningful ways of managing the impact that a cancer diagnosis can have on your life.

How can Counselling help?

Receiving a cancer diagnosis may cause feelings such as fear, anger or anxiety about the treatment and journey involved. Talking to one of our trained and registered counsellors can help you in many ways, including coping with your reactions to cancer, family and relationship issues, exploring personal issues and dealing with practical issues. It can help you cope better with any difficulties you face, both during and after your cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Is remote counselling effective?

As well as our in-person counselling service, we offer a remote, online option.

Remote counselling offers flexibility and accessibility, allowing you to connect with a trained professional from the comfort and privacy of your own home and removing potential barriers such as travel time, mobility issues or geographical location. This means that you may be able to fit counselling into your busy or unpredictable schedule more easily, especially helpful for cancer patients or their families who may have frequent medical appointments or fluctuating energy levels.

Remote counselling also provides a safe, confidential space where people can openly share their feelings without the pressure of face-to-face interaction. For some, this can make opening up easier and less intimidating. Our remote counselling combines professional care with comfort and convenience, putting emotional support within easier reach for those who need it most.

How to refer

If you are new to Wessex Cancer Support and have not already had a wellbeing assessment with one of our friendly team, we ask that you contact us to make a referral for an appointment. Our team will provide you with further information and availability of any activities you both decide on. As a new client, we’ll add you to our email newsletter list so you can keep an eye on forthcoming activities, too.

Alternatively, you can email careteam@wessexcancer.org.uk to book your initial chat or drop into your local cancer support centre in person.

I’ve never tried remote counselling before, what do I need to do?

To make the most of your remote counselling sessions, it helps to create a calm and comfortable space where you won’t be interrupted, somewhere that feels private and safe. Minimising distractions, like silencing notifications and letting others know you’re unavailable, can really help you stay focussed.  It’s also a good idea to check your internet connection and tech setup ahead of time to avoid any unexpected glitches.

While it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure at first, being open and honest during your sessions will help you get the support you need. Some people find it helpful to jot down thoughts or reflections afterwards. It can also be helpful to allow yourself a bit of quiet time after your session, especially if strong emotions come up. Most importantly, try to attend your sessions regularly, this will help build trust and gives you time for your sessions to really make an impact.

Donate to support a
remote counselling session

Your donation helps make services like our remote counselling possible. Counselling can be an essential support for those affected by cancer. £40 could help support the cost of a session for a client, giving them the essential wellbeing support they need, when they need it.

Remote counselling sessions are generously funded by people who donate, fundraise, and shop with us. Every penny you donate makes a huge difference. From everyone at Wessex Cancer Support, thank you.

Before I found Wessex Cancer Support I met with 3 different Counsellors who couldn’t manage the hard conversations and thoughts that come with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. It was such an enormous relief to be able to explore these and then to come out the ‘Other Side’. I’m so very thankful for their skills and support.
