Reflexology is a complementary, holistic therapy that involves applying pressure and massaging certain areas of the hands, feet or ears.  It is based on the principle that particular areas of our hands, feet or ears – the reflexes – are linked to other areas of the body through our nervous system.

What is reflexology?

By stimulating those reflexes, we can stimulate or sooth those other areas indirectly. The aim of a reflexology treatment is to encourage healing and relieve stress and tension. It is also used to improve general health and promote a sense of well-being.

How can reflexology benefit someone with cancer?

Anyone living with cancer, or supporting someone with cancer, will know that it’s a stressful, tiring and uncertain time. A reflexology treatment offers a moment of calm that can help you rest, relax and let go of whatever is worrying you.

Importantly, reflexology is non-invasive and can be adapted for people with limited mobility or energy. It doesn’t involve medication or medical equipment and sessions are typically carried out while the person is fully clothed, with just shoes and socks removed. This can make reflexology more suitable than other hands-on therapies if you’ve recently had surgery or are having radiotherapy treatments.

The rhythmic pressure applied during reflexology often leads to a deep sense of calm, helping to reduce stress hormones and promote better sleep. The therapeutic touch can be comforting at a time when individuals may feel disconnected from their bodies or uncertain about the future.

Although the scientific evidence is still developing, many cancer patients report that reflexology helps to relieve their discomfort, pain and digestive issues, particularly when used alongside conventional care. Some small studies and patient feedback have suggested that reflexology may help ease some side effects of chemotherapy and improve overall quality of life. Reflexology offers a gentle, reassuring form of support, helping cancer patients and their carers relax, recharge and feel more at ease in both body and mind.

Is reflexology safe if I have cancer?

Reflexology is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified practitioner like ours here at Wessex Cancer Support.  However, as with any complementary therapy, we will take you through our health check before your first treatment to ensure that it’s right for you. It’s not just your cancer and treatments we will ask you about, some other medical issues, such as blood clots or heart conditions, can mean it might not be suitable for you.

How to refer

If you are new to Wessex Cancer Support and have not already had a wellbeing assessment with one of our friendly team, we ask that you contact us to make a referral for an appointment. Our team will provide you with further information and availability of any activities you both decide on. As a new client, we’ll add you to our email newsletter list so you can keep an eye on forthcoming activities, too.

Alternatively, you can email careteam@wessexcancer.org.uk to refer to your initial chat or drop into your local cancer support centre in person. Remember, we’re also here for your loved ones.  Family members and carers are welcome to access our services too. There’s no need for a doctor’s referral, just contact your nearest Centre to arrange a time to come in and chat.

What should I expect from a reflexology session?

If you’ve never had reflexology before, there’s nothing to worry about, it’s a gentle, calming treatment that many people find deeply relaxing.

You don’t need to prepare much beforehand, just wear comfortable clothing and make sure your feet are in a condition that you’re happy to show the therapist. You’ll be asked to sit in a reclining chair or lie on a massage couch while the reflexologist works on your feet using their hands and fingers. There’s no need to bring anything with you, although you might like to have a bottle of water for afterwards, as it’s important to stay hydrated. The treatment shouldn’t be painful but do let your therapist know if you feel any discomfort or have any ticklish spots. Most importantly, give yourself permission to relax and enjoy some time just for you.

a reflexology session

Your donation helps make services like our reflexology possible. Reflexology can provide comfort and relieve pressure for those affected by cancer. £40 could help support the cost of a session for a client, giving them the essential wellbeing support they need.

Reflexology sessions are generously funded by people who donate, fundraise, and shop with us. Every penny you donate makes a huge difference. From everyone at Wessex Cancer Support, thank you.
