Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialised type of massage designed to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid throughout the body. It helps remove toxins from body tissues, supports the immune system and can help reduce swelling after surgery or cancer treatment. It is also a very calming experience.

What is lymphoedema?

Your body’s lymphatic system plays an important part in fighting infections and getting rid of waste products. If yours isn’t working properly you can develop lymphoedema, a build-up of fluid that causes swelling in the body’s tissues. It’s thought that about 200,000 people in the UK have the condition but it’s more frequent in those living with cancer.  This can be due to cancer causing changes in the lymphatic system or because of cancer treatments to the lymph nodes. If you’d like to read more about it’s causes and possible treatments, the NHS website has information available on their website.

You should always speak to your clinical team before having any manual lymphatic drainage treatments to ensure they would be appropriate for you.

How does manual lymphatic drainage work?

Our specialist therapists use light, rhythmic movements to stimulate the flow of lymph. They use a much lighter touch than traditional massage because lymphatic vessels are delicate and just under your skin. Treatment can focus on particular areas, for example to help reduce a specific swelling, or be more general. If you feel uncomfortable with being touched in the affected area, we do understand. Our specialist therapists will work with you to find a solution, such as showing you how you can build some gentle self-massage into your routine at home. We can also share some self-care videos to help you manage the condition between treatments too.

How does manual lymphatic drainage help?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) or manual lymphatic massage is an ideal complementary therapy for those living with cancer, particularly in helping to manage some of the side-effects of treatment, like lymphoedema, tiredness and pain. Benefits include:

Pain relief

−

A gentle touch can help soothe feelings of tightness, aches and pains, whether caused by surgery, radiation treatments or inflammation.

Immune support

+

Improving your lymph flow helps flush out toxins and can help stimulate your immune system.

Scar reduction and improved healing

+

Because it enhances your circulation, MLD can speed up the healing process and can help reduce the formation of scar tissue.

Improved range of motion

+

MLD, like other forms of massage, can reduce pain and swelling, helping to restore a range of motion in limbs, perhaps following surgery.

Lymphoedema management

+

Especially after lymph node removal or radiation, MLD can help manage swelling and discomfort in affected areas.

Reduce anxiety

+

An MLD treatment is a relaxing experience, which can reduce stress levels and help manage problems like insomnia.  Whether you have been diagnosed with cancer or you are supporting someone who has been, an MLD massage will help promote feelings of calm and wellbeing.

What should I expect from a manual lymphatic drainage treatment?

For your treatment, it’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid applying lotions or oils to your skin before the session. Your therapist will ensure you’re in a comfortable position throughout, and afterwards you may feel relaxed or slightly tired, so allowing some rest time can be beneficial.  You will be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids after your session, to help flush-out your system, and you’ll probably find you need to visit the loo a little more frequently.  This is perfectly normal and a sign that your lymphatic system is working as it should be.

Donate to support
an MLD treatment session

Your donation helps make services like our Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) possible. Helping to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid throughout the body, these treatments can provide essential comfort and relief from the physical effects of some treatments. £45 could help support the cost of an MLD treatment session for a client, giving them the essential care and wellbeing support they need.

Beauty and facial treatment sessions are generously funded by people who donate, fundraise, and shop with us. Every penny you donate makes a huge difference. From everyone at Wessex Cancer Support, thank you.
