Aromatherapy is a gentle, complementary therapy that can offer real comfort to those undergoing cancer treatment. Although not a cure, it can help ease some of the emotional and physical side effects that often come with a cancer diagnosis.
What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a holistic healing practice that uses natural plant extracts, known as essential oils, to promote physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. These oils are typically inhaled or applied to the skin through massage, allowing their natural aromas and properties to stimulate the body and mind. Each essential oil has its own unique therapeutic qualities. For example, peppermint can aid focus and relieve headaches while lavender can help with relaxation and sleep.
Our sense of smell is closely linked to the brain’s limbic system, the area that controls our emotions, memory and mood. Using aromatherapy techniques to stimulate our limbic system can help reduce stress, lift mood, improve sleep, ease discomfort and create a sense of calm. Aromatherapy offers gentle, supportive care that can be personalised to meet your individual needs with each treatment.
How can aromatherapy support people with cancer?
For someone coping with the stress, fatigue or nausea that can accompany cancer treatment, aromatherapy can be incredibly valuable. Many people find that aromatherapy helps lift their mood or gives them a small moment of peace in what can be a very difficult journey. It’s a simple way to care for both body and mind and help you feel more like your old self again. Of course, our trained specialists will always check that any oils they use won’t interfere with any medications or treatments you are having. While aromatherapy won’t treat cancer, it is a lovely, supportive tool that brings a bit of comfort when it’s most needed.
Of course, it’s not just people with cancer who benefit from aromatherapy, family members and carers often find it helpful as well. Supporting a loved one through cancer can be emotionally and physically exhausting, and aromatherapy offers a gentle way to manage stress, anxiety and sleepless nights. A calming scent like lavender or bergamot can bring a few moments of peace. For many, it’s a small but meaningful form of self-care during a challenging time. Looking after your own well-being helps you better support the person you love.
How to refer
If you are new to Wessex Cancer Support and have not already had a wellbeing assessment with one of our friendly team, we ask that you contact us to make a referral for an appointment. Our team will provide you with further information and availability of any activities you both decide on. As a new client, we’ll add you to our email newsletter list so you can keep an eye on forthcoming activities, too.
Alternatively, you can email careteam@wessexcancer.org.uk to refer to your initial chat or drop into your local cancer support centre in person.
What should I expect in my aromatherapy treatment?Â
During your session, a therapist will tailor a blend of oils to suit your individual needs, helping to your promote relaxation and overall wellbeing by applying them through gentle massage or inhalation. There’s no special preparation required but it’s best to wear comfortable clothing and arrive a few minutes early to discuss any health concerns or preferences. Afterwards, you may feel deeply relaxed, so allowing yourself some quiet time is to be recommended.
Donate to support
an aromatherapy session
Your donation helps make services like our aromatherapy possible. Aromatherapy can provide comfort and relief from the physical and emotional effects of cancer treatments. £40 could help support the cost of a session for a client, giving them the essential wellbeing support they need.
Aromatherapy sessions are generously funded by people who donate, fundraise, and shop with us. Every penny you donate makes a huge difference. From everyone at Wessex Cancer Support, thank you.
