Debbie, who lives in Fawley near Southampton, says her breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery left her feeling lonely and isolated.
“After having a mastectomy, I hit rock bottom. I hated how I looked and had brain fog from my chemotherapy treatment.
“I felt like life would never be the same again. I didn’t want to be here and wondered what on earth I’d done to deserve this.
“My breast cancer care nurse, Emma, recommended Wessex Cancer Support’s Waterside centre, but it took me about three weeks to actually walk through the door. I really wasn’t sure how they’d be able to help me when I felt so low.
“I live in Fawley, about a 10-minute drive from the Waterside cancer support centre, which is right next to the Hythe waterfront. It feels really peaceful and relaxing there. I’d heard of charities offering support from Southampton Hospital, but because my husband had been driving me there and back for many months for my treatment, I really didn’t want to go back to hospital.
“I decided to give Wessex Cancer Support a go and met with Phil, their Wellbeing Coordinator. He wasn’t pushy at all. We just chatted about what I’d been through and he suggested some things that might help. It was reassuring just to know that someone was there for me and could understand.
“When I think about how far I’ve come since that first meeting, I realise that seeking support has been the best thing I’ve ever done. Counselling has enabled me to come to terms with everything I’ve been through and be completely honest about how I’m feeling with no fear of being judged. Physically, bad lymphoedema (a condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues), meant I could barely lift my arm, but I’ve been having the most wonderful massage that’s made it so much better.
“I still have good days and bad days, of course, but with Wessex Cancer Support by my side, I’m enjoying life again and feel more like my old self.
“To anyone feeling sceptical about accessing support, I’d say give it a go. Despite the wonderful support of my husband, sisters and all my family and friends, there were still times I felt incredibly isolated and lonely. Wessex Cancer Support knows how this feels and can give you the support that’s right for you.”
