Cancer, and why we need to talk about it

Cancer is likely to affect most people at some point in their lives, but it can still be really hard to talk about it, so we were pleased that The King chose to share his diagnosis publicly. There’s no right or wrong way to respond to a cancer diagnosis and we encourage open conversations about the impact it can have.

The King’s diagnosis prompted a 51% increase in searches for NHS cancer advice.

Because of The King’s announcement, we had the opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of talking about cancer and the impact it can have. ITV Meridian came to film our Chandler’s Ford support centre and interviewed our wonderful client, Don, and we were interviewed on Wave 105 and BBC Radio Solent.

Our CEO, Rachel, and our client, Nat, spoke to BBC Radio Solent Dorset’s Steve Harris the following week. Nat spoke eloquently about how her cancer diagnosis and treatment have changed her life, and the help our Bournemouth support centre has given her.  We were grateful to BBC Radio Solent Dorset for welcoming Rachel to chat about how important it is to have open conversations about cancer and the benefits of seeking emotional support.

We also wanted to highlight this brilliant Podcast, featuring Stephen Fry. Stephen talks about his own diagnosis of an aggressive prostate cancer. Host Nick Robinson discusses his own experience of cancer and they speak to Professor Pat Price, one of the UK’s leading oncologists. The Today Podcast – Why we need to talk about cancer ft. Stephen Fry – BBC Sounds.

If you’re affected by cancer and wondering how support might help, we can help.
