As a volunteer support worker, Karen is someone ‘safe’ our clients can open up to as they navigate their cancer journey and volunteering at Wessex Cancer Support feels like an extension of her family.
Karen, who also helps with admin tasks, says the roles are perfect for her.
“When I was approaching retirement, I knew I didn’t want to be sitting around doing nothing,” said Karen. “Having been largely home based for the last few years, I wanted to find something that was meaningful and helpful, which enabled me to meet and talk to people. If you have cancer, often, you don’t want to be a burden on your family, but it’s really important to talk and open up about how you’re feeling. After spending time with someone, we can see they feel happier, and that is a really rewarding feeling.
“Everyone is so friendly and welcoming at Wessex – it’s like having another mini family. And as much as we are there to help our clients, we support each other too, which is lovely.”
For Sarah Davies, who is based at our Chandlers Ford support centre, the impact of our work is why she has devoted the last eight years to volunteering with us.
“I used to be a nurse and I wanted to find a caring and nurturing volunteering role, because the importance of having support outside the hospital setting is critical for people with cancer,” she said. “To have more time to be there to listen, guide and signpost them is invaluable.”
Soon after becoming a volunteer, Sarah set up a walking group with fellow volunteer Marion Dockeray, open to clients and anyone who has been bereaved.
“It has been so beneficial, just as much for me as it is for people who come along,” said Sarah. “It’s so great to be able to support people when they’re so vulnerable. Lots of men have joined us too, and they support each other, which is important. Just seeing people come together and feel happier makes it all so worthwhile.”
As well as support volunteer in our centres, we also need volunteers for our shops and in the office. If you would like to know more about volunteering opportunities please email: volunteer@wessexcancer.org.uk or telephone: 023 8067 2200.
