As the sun rose over the Solent on Saturday morning, 9th August, 36 swimmers set off from Hurst Spit on one of the most memorable crossings in Swim for Hope’s history – raising more than previous swims and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The start time of 5:35am might sound daunting but for those gathered on the shoreline in the early hours of Saturday, it was the beginning of something extraordinary. Swim for Hope 2026 saw 36 swimmers take to the water for the crossing from Hurst Spit to Colwell Bay, supported by a remarkable team of over 30 kayakers and safety boats working in close coordination to ensure every participant completed the journey safely and triumphantly.

Conditions were as close to perfect as the Solent can offer. The water was calm, the sky was clear and as the sun climbed above the horizon, it lit up a scene that participants and supporters alike are unlikely to forget. But for many, the abiding memory won’t be the scenery, it will be the people.

“Such Quick and Special Bonds”

That spirit of shared endeavour was captured perfectly by one participant, who described the day as “a magical experience”:

“Thank you so much for the impeccable organisation, the kayaking stars, the shore support and everyone who helped make the day so special. I loved the swim and really enjoyed meeting everyone. Such quick and special bonds were formed between us all through sharing this experience together.”

It is that sense of connection – between swimmers, volunteers and the cause they are all swimming for – that makes our Swim for Hope so much more than a fundraising event. Since its conception in 2021, the event has raised an extraordinary amounts for Wessex Cancer Support, which speaks to the courage and generosity of everyone who has taken part over six swims.

Swimming for Something That Matters

Every pound raised through Swim for Hope goes directly to supporting people affected by cancer across the Wessex region. Wessex Cancer Support provides free counselling, complementary therapies and peer support programmes to patients, families and carers — services that are funded entirely through charitable donations and community fundraising just like this.

The amount raised this year will make a tangible difference to local people navigating some of the most difficult moments of their lives. For the swimmers who crossed the Solent at dawn on Saturday, that knowledge makes every stroke worthwhile.
