This summer I’ll be swimming the Solent – 1.3 miles of cold, tidal, unpredictable water to raise money for a cancer charity that means the world to me.

Back in 2011, when my mum was terminally ill with cancer, only months after we’d lost our dad, the support we received from charities and local hospices was extraordinary. They held us up when life felt impossible. They gave mum dignity, compassion, and the most incredible care. My sister and I never forgot it. Another factor is that since having ankle reconstruction surgery in March, I’ve struggled to commit to rehab while juggling a busy desk‑based job as a lawyer. Signing up for this challenge has changed everything. It’s given me structure, motivation, and a reason to get stronger every day. And in a strange way, it’s reconnected me with the girl I once was – the one who dreamt of swimming the Channel but never quite got there!

Most of all, I am inspired by my mum.

She never complained once during her gruelling illness and treatment. Not once. If she could face that with such courage, I can certainly face a stretch of cold sea. And the icing on the cake, I’m swimming it with the daughter of my best friend from school, a friendship that started 45 years ago and has shaped so much of my life.

To take on this challenge together feels incredibly special. I’m swimming in memory of my parents, in gratitude for the support we received, and in hope that other families will feel that same kindness when they need it most. I am super excited to meet the other swimmers and take on this challenge together. Here’s to courage, connection, and cold water!
