The personal account of Lin and Adam provides a powerful testimonial to the emotional and practical support offered by Wessex Cancer Support. Following Adam’s initial diagnosis and subsequent terminal prognosis for throat cancer, the couple faced an overwhelming and ‘brutal’ emotional rollercoaster.
Their story highlights the initial feeling of isolation and struggle before finding essential help many experiences when faced with cancer.
“Walking through the door of the Wessex Cancer Support Centre felt like the best thing in the world.”
When Lin’s husband, Adam, was diagnosed with throat cancer two years ago, the couple had no idea just how ‘brutal’ life would get. An intensive six weeks of radiotherapy appeared to have cured Adam of his cancer, only for it to return, with the prognosis now terminal.
The emotional rollercoaster took its toll on them both, and it appeared there was no-one to help, until Wessex Cancer Support stepped in.
“Everything changed as soon as they called. Until then, it felt like a big door had shut in our faces and we had no idea how to walk through it. We didn’t know what to expect or how difficult it would be going through treatment. I wasn’t coping, I bottled everything up and couldn’t support Adam properly.”
The call to Lin was a huge turning point for the couple. Through our friendly team, Lin was able to speak to our Wellbeing Coordinator who was able to advise and tailor a support package that was right for them. Lin was able to access our therapeutic and emotional support services, enabling her to share her struggles and experiences and receive the care and understanding that was needed.
“Walking through the door of the Wessex Cancer Support centre felt like the best thing in the world. It meant everything to me to meet people who understood me, who could help guide me through this time.
“I’ve learned how to manage things better, to stay calm and not to over expect anything. I cannot sing their praises highly enough.”
Adam, 71, has also directly benefitted from our support, accessing our online courses, which cover a range of topics, including nutrition, relaxation techniques and general wellbeing during cancer treatments.
“Lin and I have both gained so much and we are incredibly grateful to Wessex Cancer Support for everything they have done for us. Knowing Lin has someone to lean on is a big comfort to me too and it has made such a difference to us both.”
