Every year, millions of bags of donated clothing and household items arrive at charity shops across the UK. It’s one of the most straightforward ways to do something good: a clear-out that directly benefits people in your community. But there’s an art to donating well and a few things that most people don’t realise. Here, the team at Wessex Cancer Support shops* share what they’d love every donor to know.

1. Condition matters more than cost

It’s a common misconception that charity shops are mainly interested in designer labels and expensive items. In reality, what matters far more than the price tag is the condition. A clean, well-ironed high street top in excellent condition will sell far more quickly – and raise more money – than a high-end item that’s stained or worn.

Before you donate, ask yourself: would I give this to a friend? If the honest answer is yes, it’s worth donating. If it’s seen better days, it’s probably not going to sell — and that creates a cost rather than a benefit for the charity.

The golden rule: clean, complete and in good condition. That’s what helps us help others.

2. We work hard not to create waste – but we need your help

Wessex Cancer Support is committed to being part of the solution, not the problem, when it comes to sustainability. Our shops make every effort to sell, repurpose or recycle donated items rather than sending them to landfill.

But here’s the reality: when items arrive that can’t be sold – stained clothing, broken toys, incomplete sets, damaged bric-a-brac – we have to pay to dispose of them. Those disposal costs come directly out of the money that would otherwise go to supporting people living with cancer.

So every donation that arrives in good condition is doubly valuable: it raises money AND avoids a disposal cost. And every donation that arrives in poor condition has the opposite effect.

3. Your donation goes further than you’d think – especially with Gift Aid

If you’re a UK taxpayer, signing up for Gift Aid when you donate is one of the simplest and most impactful things you can do. It allows the charity to claim an extra 25p from the government for every £1 your donated items raise – at no additional cost to you whatsoever.Over time, that adds up to a significant additional income for the charity. It takes just a moment to sign up and it makes a real, lasting difference to the people Wessex Cancer Support serves.

4. High-value items are given special treatment

Every item donated to a Wessex Cancer Support shop is checked by our team. Items of particular value – whether that’s a vintage piece, a quality brand, antiques, jewellery or collectables – are identified and given the attention they deserve. That might mean a place on a premium rail, specialist pricing or listing on one of the major online selling platforms.

5. The environmental impact of buying second-hand is staggering

Here’s the statistic that tends to stop people in their tracks: it takes approximately 20,000 litres of water to produce a single t-shirt and a pair of jeans. Read that again. Twenty thousand litres. That’s roughly the amount of water a person drinks over 27 years.

When you buy second-hand – from a charity shop, a preloved platform or a clothing swap – you’re not just saving money. You’re opting out of that enormous environmental cost. The garment already exists; no new water, energy or raw materials are needed to produce it.
In the context of the long, dry summer we’ve just had – and an increasingly urgent climate conversation – buying preloved isn’t just a bargain. It’s a statement.
