45 stories for 45 years. Throughout 2026, we’re sharing the stories of our clients, volunteers and staff who make the Wessex Cancer Support community what it is.

Through our community’s lived experience of cancer, we can provide our clients with the tailored support they need.

For this edition, our client, Mrs Kaur, shares her story and experience.

I was shocked. Getting my diagnosis felt unreal, like everything suddenly slowed down and yet my mind was racing at the same time. There was a sense of disbelief at first almost as if it couldn’t be true. Very quickly, that turned into fear of the unknown and questions about what would come next. It was overwhelming, and difficult to take everything in during that moment.

The uncertainty was hard

One of the hardest parts has been not knowing how long everything will last. The uncertainty can be exhausting, physically and emotionally. There are moments where you feel strong, and others where it all feels very heavy.

Coping with the ups and downs, and the waiting, has been one of the biggest challenges.

Meaningful moments made a difference

There have been small but meaningful moments that made a difference, kind words from others, feeling listened to, or simply having a day where things felt a bit more normal. Those moments reminded me that I wasn’t alone and that there is still positivity to hold onto, even during difficult times.

Wessex Cancer Support listened

They have been very understanding, helpful, and always there to talk.

Having someone who listens without judgement and offers reassurance has made a real difference.

It helped me feel supported, less isolated, and more able to cope with what I was going through.

Sharing my story might help others

I want to help and inspire others who may be going through something similar, as well as their families and friends. It’s important for people to know how much support, kindness and simply being there can mean.

I would say to accept help, stay connected to those around you, and hold onto whatever gives you strength, whether that’s belief, spirituality, or the support of loved ones.

This experience has made me more appreciative

It has made me more aware of what truly matters, health, relationships and taking each day as it comes. I feel more appreciative of the small things and more mindful about how I spend my time and energy. It has also encouraged me to stay positive where I can and to support others in any way I’m able.
