In the build-up to World Cancer Day on 4th February, Wessex Cancer Trust reached out to their network of supporters to hear more about their experiences with having cancer.

It’s not new to hear that cancer can affect all parts of a patient’s life. Everyone that responded to the survey had a different aspect to their life changed after receiving their diagnosis, whether it be financially or at work. 90% of people surveyed mentioned a change in relationship with their partner. Over half of these said their bond became stronger and more united.

The diagnosis brought us closer, we went through everything together. He’s was positive we would get through it!

Even after treatment has finished, the feeling of worry can continue for many years. For most, cancer will always be in the shadow of their lives. 100% of people said they worry cancer will never leave them. This can affect self-confidence and the ability to live their lives to the full.

It took me 6 years to move on with my life after. I then had a recurrence 10 years after my original diagnosis. I now live in fear that I will never be free from cancer.

Many people find they need the support and strength from others to help with their stress and worry. This support is needed throughout treatment and long after. Wessex Cancer Trust believes there should be help and support available to everyone living with cancer, when and where they need it.

The charity helps and supports anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis, regardless of age, sex or type of cancer they have, during diagnosis, treatment, recovery, remission or end life. The dedicated team are committed to offering free support for as long as people need it, in a comfortable environment.

Visiting Wessex Cancer Trust Support Centre helped take my mind off treatment. I also found learning to play the piano reduced my stress levels.

If you or a loved one is feeling the stress or worry from a cancer diagnosis, contact one of their seven Cancer Support Centres and see how they can offer their support.
