Support Volunteer  for ‘Betty’ our Mobile Support Unit

Can you listen, offer support and have empathy for people living with or affected by cancer? Do you have a few hours to spare per week? We need you to join our friendly team offering practical help and emotional support to local people on our brand new ‘Betty’ Bus.

The support unit operates between 10am and 4pm in the below locations:

Tuesday - Ferndown
Penny's Lodge Car Park,
Library Road,
Ferndown
BH22 9JP

Wednesday - Poundbury
Prince Of Wales Surgery Car Park,
Frederick Treves House,
St John Way,
Dorchester
DT1 2FD

Thursday - Wareham
Stretche Road Car Park,
Wareham
BH20 4PB

 

How much time do I need to offer?

Individual times can be agreed between each volunteer but typically we ask for a 3-4 hour commitment per week.

What activities will I be involved in?

The befriending role is to listen and talk to people affected by cancer and provide them with support and information. This can help to lessen isolation, increase confidence and provide reassurance at a very difficult time.

What are we looking for?

No experience is required as full training and support will be provided however the role would suit someone with the following skills:

  • Ability to communicate clearly with others

  • An effective listener

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to be respectful of people’s differences and choices

  • Enjoy helping people

 

What else should I know?

  • This role requires a DBS check

  • You will need to travel to reach Betty Bus at her location either with your own vehicle or public transport.
