Indigestion or heartburn can cause pain and discomfort which may make eating more difficult.

Useful tips:

  • Eat little and often

  • Pace yourself at mealtimes. Eat slowly and chew your food well to help with digestion

  • Try not to lie down directly after a meal. Sitting for 20 to 30 minutes after a meal may help

  • Avoid bending or lifting immediately after eating

  • Spicy, fried and fatty foods may worsen your symptoms

  • Acidic foods e.g. citrus fruits and juices may increase heartburn

  • Caffeine, alcohol and tobacco may also worsen your heartburn or indigestion

  • Some people find milky drinks or foods may relieve symptoms

  • Avoid drinking large amounts of fluid at mealtimes – try to take drinks between the meals instead.

If your symptoms persist, speak to your doctor who may prescribe suitable medication
