Isla Walker, an eleven-year-old pupil at Wildern School in Hedge End, has won a competition to design our 2020 e-Christmas card.
We partnered with the secondary school and asked pupils in years seven to ten to design a card which will be sold to local organisations to raise money for local families living with cancer.
The designs were shown to the 233 members of our closed Facebook support group, who voted for Isla’s rainbow robin design.
Isla said:
“I wasn’t expecting to win, so I’m really shocked and didn’t know what to say! I’m really happy and excited! Robins mean a loved one nearby and it reminds me of my Nan, and they also make us think of Christmas, and the rainbow signifies 2020.”

Mrs Yates, Wildern School’s charity and community co-ordinator who ran the competition, said it was a poignant activity for pupils to take part in:
“Sometimes we think of cancer only affecting older people, but everyone can be touched by it, including children, so as a school we wanted to raise awareness of the support Wessex Cancer Support can provide to anyone in our local community. We also thought it was a poignant time to ask our pupils what 2020 has meant to them and try and put all of these things together to design a meaningful card. We thought Isla’s card really captured this and are delighted for her.”
Charlotte von Sicard, Wessex Cancer Support’s regional community manager, said she was delighted to have the opportunity to work with a local school:
“Living with cancer can be really tough for the whole family, so being able to partner with a local school is a great way to help raise awareness of the free support we can provide. We also wanted to help spread some festive cheer, and thought who better than a young person to design a card that reflects what that support can mean, especially during this tough year. The Facebook support group loved what the rainbow robin says about hope and finding joy in every day.”
