Stories And News Stories Lewis' Story This is Lewis. He’s been supported by Wessex Cancer Trust’s children’s services for several years after being diagnosed with leukaemia. Cancer is hard to deal with at any age, but for children and young people, it can be particularly challenging. Lewis had gruelling treatment and spent weeks in a coma. Despite coming through his treatment feeling physically stronger, the emotional trauma left him feeling angry, lost and misunderstood. Lewis visited Wessex Cancer Trust’s Waterside Support Centre for counselling. He says: “Everyone was so welcoming. I trusted them and felt like I didn’t have to explain myself to anyone. They just understood. I felt like a 70-year-old in the body of a young lad, but at the Centre, I felt like I was in a safe place. It helped me release the burden, my anger and frustrations. It really made, and continues to make, a difference. I still go and see the befrienders and have counselling to help me come to terms with what’s happened and cope with my worries for the future."
