Counselling - E.BeckettDawn was told about the Wessex Cancer Centre in Cosham by the Hospital after being diagnosed.

“From the minute I walked through the Wessex Cancer Trust door I felt at home. As I sat talking with Gina I suddenly felt tears running down my face. Tears I had been holding back for ages as I couldn’t cry in front of my close ones as I felt I had to be strong in front of everyone. I made an appointment with Gina after that for counselling. I attended a few sessions with Gina and then we left it open for me to make an appointment if I needed it.

Before leaving I was told about all the other therapies on offer and decided to try Reiki as I had never had it before. As soon as I met Joy for my first Reiki session she made me feel so comfortable. I found the Reiki very relaxing and couldn’t wait for my next appointment. Before I started Reiki I suffered with pain in my left hip and lower back where the cancer attacked my bones. Now I feel like I could run a marathon; it has helped me immensely. In fact, it wasn’t quite a marathon, but I did take part in the race for life enabling me to raise money for cancer charities.

Sadly, Joy left the Centre but Graham took over with the Reiki. Graham has continued all the great improvements that have been achieved for me personally through the Centre and I look forward to coming in for a Reiki session as often as I can. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I cannot attend the Centre as much as I used to but I still try and go in on a monthly basis.

I have met some lovely people within the Centre who have all been through similar experiences to me. I have found myself sitting and chatting to total strangers who I probably would never have spoken to had it not been for the Centre and shared experiences. When you are diagnosed with cancer you feel like you are the only person to go through it. When you are in the Centre you realise you are not alone.

The Wessex Centre and all the people who work there from the therapists and befrienders to the admin staff are all fantastic. I don’t think I would be where I am today without the Centre and hope that it continues to help many others."
