Their time included:

  • 12,000 hours being a befriender and providing support in our six support centres
  • 34,000 hours working in the retail shops
  • 2,000 hours fundraising

The release of the figures coincides with Volunteers' Week which runs from 1-7 June, an annual campaign which recognises the contribution volunteers make to our communities every day. Their research shows that as well as helping others, volunteering can also improve volunteers' wellbeing.

Indya Mclaren, who started volunteering with us in January 2017, said:

I've helped at events and also been a befriender in my local support centre. Giving something back is such a good feeling. It's also helped me to develop new skills and given me so many different experiences.

Sofie Bennett, our Head of Development, said:

We've always known our volunteers are amazing, but we were astounded when we saw exactly how much time they'd given us last year. From being a friendly face in our support centres, to fundraising and helping at our events, they can literally change the lives of people living with cancer, and we're incredibly proud of them.
