We are delighted to be the Lead Charity Partner for the 2020 May Day Triathlon in Winchester! The event, which is organised by ReesLeisure, will take place on Friday 8 May at Kings’ School. Part of the ‘TryTri’ series, the May Day triathlon is the perfect opportunity to take part in a new challenge while raising money to help local people affected by cancer.  

You can choose to enter as an individual or as part of a team and you certainly don’t need to be an athlete to take part! Triathletes come in all shapes and sizes, and with very different levels of ability, the most important thing is that you enjoy it and have fun. 

The swim will take place in a shallow, beginner-friendly 6 lane pool, and you’ll be swimming with people of a similar ability. You’ll then cycle out of the historic medieval city into the beautiful surrounding countryside, taking in the lovely village of Sparsholt.  The run is slightly hilly, on a combination of footpaths and school playing fields. There will be plenty of people cheering you on as you cross the finish line and proudly collect your medal.

We spoke to Louella O’Herlihy from Poole who started her sporting career as a rugby player but got into triathlon later in life. Louella trained as a physiotherapist, but after losing her father to cancer in 2013 decided to retrain as an acupuncturist and now spends one day a week working at the Wessex Cancer Trust Support Centre in Bournemouth.    


Louella got into triathlons in 2011 when she did a TryTri event and loved it, despite being the only person in a bikini for the sea swim in September and pretty much last out of the water! 

“I loved how friendly and helpful everyone was, but most of all I was blown away by the competitors in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.”

Louella is now a GB middle-distance triathlete and competes in events all around the world in the 50-54 age group. 


Here are Louella’s top tips for completing a triathlon:

  • Try not to put too much pressure on yourself and just enjoy the experience, every element is so different.
  • Try and train consistently – there are plenty of online plans to help you out.    
  • Be kind to your body. You’ll get out what you put in.
  • Break each element down and make sure you recognise completing each part as a huge achievement.
  • Try and do something most days so your body gets used to it. Even if you’re not feeling like it one day you’ll be thankful you’ve got into the mindset.
  • Stay hydrated and take on food. You’ll be surprised at how many calories you burn!
