Over one hundred people from across the South turned out for Wessex Cancer Trust's first Walk for Hope on Sunday 4th June.

Celebrating National Cancer Survivors day, families and friends joined together to take part in a charity walk through the beautiful New Forest.

The day began for our 10 and 20 mile walkers at Dan Tanner's Burley Park, setting off in glorious sunshine with plenty of water supplied by sponsor Hildon.  At the half way point, Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, the walkers were invited to enjoy a cake and a hug from the Wessex Cancer Trust's mascot, Wolly.

Each walker was greeted at the Burley finish line with cheers and hugs from family and friends. With a virgin mojito in hand, they were each crowned by Spencers Estate Agents with a Walk for Hope medal. The finishers then enjoyed music from our choir for those affected by cancer, Sing for Life, and folk band, Stomping Boondocks, both staged in a Willbox Container.

Head of Fundraising, Sofie Bennett, said:

"We are absolutely in awe of the amazing walkers that braved the hot weather and challenging route to raise funds for local families affected by cancer. Cancer patients, survivors and supporters really came together to walk for a purpose, and the atmosphere throughout the day was incredible. A huge thank you to the forestry commission, volunteers and local businesses who made this special day possible, and of course congratulations to our walkers on their achievement."

One walker who completed the 20 mile route said:

“I have never walked anything like 20 miles in one day. If having cancer has taught me anything, it is to cherish every day and just ‘go for it’! I’m so glad we did the walk and raised money for such an amazing cause.”

** Our 2017 walk has raised an amazing £25,000 **

Money raised from the Walk for Hope will help Wessex Cancer Trust provide support to over 8,000 local people affected by cancer this year across the Wessex region.

Next year’s walk will take place on Sunday 10th June. For more information on taking part in the event or becoming a sponsor please contact Dawn Ingram on 023 8067 2200 or email [email protected].
