About our performers

Sing for Life
Our Sing For Life singing groups are therapeutic groups for cancer patients and their families/carers to come and sing each week with no pressure to perform, just to have fun, provide relaxation, support and meet like-minded people.

Whether you currently just sing in the car, the shower or hum along to your favourite tune, it is actually healing your body, mind and soul.  Scientific studies have now proven that music can actually contribute to the healing process. Singing, in particular, has a way of helping you to heal, as you take in more oxygen, which increases lung capacity, tones abdominal muscles and can improve circulation. This means that even a song sung out of tune can have many benefits.

Our groups can help you reconnect with yourself, your community and others going through a similar situation.

Southampton Youth Brass Band
The Southampton Youth Brass Band are one the top tier ensembles within the Southampton Music Service, now part of the Southampton Music Hub. The band is formed from youngsters who attend schools and colleges in the Southampton area. Members must be of a grade 5 standard or above to join the band and experience some of the most wonderful opportunities available to them.

Under the band's Director of Music Paul Hart, the band has recently been on several exciting tours to Italy and most recently, to Spain.
Over the past couple of years, the band have had some of the worlds finest musicians come and share their expertise with the players of the Southampton Youth Brass Bands, including the fantastic principal trombone of the Black Dyke Band Bret Baker and their incredible Principal Cornet Richard Marshall. The truly inspirational Owen Farr blew the tenor horns away with his breathtaking
virtuosic playing and the tuba players were certainly not left out when they were treated to an amazing master class given by the famous Oren Marshall. The Youth Band were also lucky enough to have worked with the wonderful Dr Robert Childs and the truly talented Tom Davoren, who wrote a brand new piece especially for the band, Music for Dancing.

The band have also had the amazing privilege to have played alongside the world-famous and number one rated brass band in the world, the fabulous Cory Brass Band on three different occasions.

Paul Hart says, 'It is also a total pleasure to have been invited to yet again perform alongside the wonderful and inspiring Sing for life choir, in aid of the Wessex Cancer Trust.'

Winchester A Cappella
Winchester A Cappella are a friendly and fun-loving ladies a cappella chorus based in Winchester. Their style is unaccompanied four-part singing, where three parts harmonise with the melody line. They use choreography and facial expression to enhance the feeling of the song and entertain our audience.

The chorus currently numbers around 40 members of all ages and musical experience and they are affiliated to LABBS (the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers). Winchester A Cappella usually compete in their annual National Convention and occasionally compete abroad.

The chorus has a varied programme of concerts and engagements each year including public events, entertaining at private functions and charity fundraising. They sing a mixture of modern ballads and up-tempo numbers as well as the more traditional Barbershop songs, all sung in a cappella.

Their repertoire has recently been renewed to ensure we remain current and fresh, under the guidance of their enthusiastic new musical director, Oliver Downer (‘Ollie’).

The ticket price includes a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie. A non-alcoholic drink and mince pie alternative will also be available.
