I found out about Wessex Cancer Trust through the Excel Internship Scheme at the University of Southampton, which seemed like a good opportunity as I am interested in going into the charitable sector after I finish my degree. I was based in the Chandler’s Ford office, working alongside Charlotte in Fundraising as a Community Engagement Officer.

I didn’t really know what to expect from my internship with Wessex, but I can confidently say that it has been an altogether positive experience. In the office, you are always made to feel like you have made an important contribution and I wasn’t given work just to fill the time I was here, but work that made a difference.

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable (and tiring!) experiences was our three-day stall at the New Forest Show. Although the weather was not always kind to us we managed to power through the 13 hour days and you couldn’t help but feel like the hard work we had put in was worthwhile. Despite not having wellies and a bit of rain, the show was lovely and a new experience for me. I was very lucky that through helping out at this event for Wessex I was also able to enjoy the show, as well as raising around £500 for the charity.

A lot of my work consisted of writing letters and applications to shops, businesses and banks. This was actually an extremely helpful skill as over the course of the month my ability to write and critically edit these kinds of documents has improved; a skill I can carry over into my university work and further into life. Another aspect has been calling up shops to ask for donations and support, something I haven’t really done before but I realised that my customer service skills carried over the phone, and I was actually glad to be pushed out of my comfort zone!

On one of the last days of my internship, I helped at the Winchester Bucket Collection. I went into this experience completely clueless, as I had never been involved in a collection before and was unsure about my approach. However, all my fellow volunteers were so friendly, and I admired how they had all come out despite the rain, that I felt encouraged to put my all in and it was a really successful day that I thoroughly enjoyed!

My month at Wessex Cancer Trust definitely was over way too quickly and I will definitely be returning as a volunteer. Everyone in the office makes you feel welcome and a day here doesn’t feel like work! Even though I am not local to the Wessex region, I still see the importance of the work this charity does and it’s comforting to think that people who have experiences of cancer, like my own loved ones, are being provided with amazing services that I helped contribute towards. For anyone considering volunteer work, it is definitely somewhere I would recommend!
